Wubi - Windows-based Ubuntu Installer

Wubi is an unofficial Ubuntu installer for Windows users that will bring you into the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other application. If you heard about Linux and Ubuntu, if you wanted to try them but you were afraid, this is for you.

How do I install Ubuntu?

Run wubi, answer the few questions, reboot and select "Ubuntu" from the boot menu, go grab a coffee and when you are back Ubuntu will be ready for you.



How do I uninstall it?

You uninstall it as any other applications. In windows go to the control panel and select "Add or Remove Programs", then select Wubi and uninstall it.
You can also use the uninstaller that you find in C:\wubi\uninstaller.exe.


Agora não há desculpas para não experimentarem o Ubuntu.
Além de não "atrapalhar" nada, não é preciso criar partições extra,nem apagar ficheiros ou sequer preocuparem-se com os "bootloaders".
Se se fartarem do Ubuntu, basta arrancar o windows e desinstalar o mesmo.

Tens a certeza que não e preciso criar partições? Ele vai simplesmente misturar com uma partição existente de Windows? Acho isso um bocado mal explicado.

Quanto à partição...não é necessário criar nenhuma pois é usado o Loopmounted Virtual Partition Manager (LVPM).

Hum, mesmo não conhecendo, imagino que crie um ficheiro de imagem da partição linux e o guarde na partição Windows (FAT/NTFS), e será o boot loader que o monte, certo?

You need to download the appropriate ISO of the appropriate version. Place the ISO in the same folder where you have Wubi-7.04-XYZ.exe. Then run Wubi.

Note: 7.04 requires the ALTERNATE ISO 7.10 requires the DESKTOP ISO

Já agora uma coisa, no boot para alterar a ordem dos SO como é que se faz?

Não estou a conseguir, começa a fazer o download na mesma, pelo menos com a versão de 64 bits (ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso) tenho de mudar o nome para outra coisa? Ou não suporta mesmo a de 64?

Wubi 7.10 is getting there... You can find experimental alpha versions in [WWW] http://wubi-installer.org/devel/minefield/ When we are satisfied with it, that will be made available via the main website.
* It is recommended to uninstall previous Wubi versions before trying out Wubi 7.10.
* Also run chkdsk /r from windows. Defragmenting also helps.
* If you see an error about "the file system type ntfs cannot be mounted on /. because it is not a fully-functional Unix file system. Please choose a different file system.", then you need to run chkdsk /r from windows and boot into Ubuntu again
* Note that 7.10 requires the DESKTOP ISO, you can download it manually and place it in the same folder containing the Wubi executable.
* Report any issue on [WWW] http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=234

estou a usar a 7.04, também já tinha reparado que está a sair a 7.10, mas como está em Alpha e vi que era possível usar a 7.04 com o Ubuntu 7.10 optei por essa via.

Mais 3 meses e está ai o Ubuntu 8.04, não sei até que ponto se devem preocupar com a 7.10 ao invés de centrarem esforços na 8.04.....

Segundo indicam não será tão rápido montado como se de um disco normal se tratasse, mas não será uma diferença muito acentuada

What is the performance?

The performance is identical to a standard installation, except for hard-disk access which is slightly slower. If your hard disk is very fragmented the performance will degenerate. However, once the Ubuntu install created by Wubi has been transferred to a dedicated partition using LVPM, the hard drive access speed will be identical to that of a standard Ubuntu installation.
