Opera upgrades hacker defences

Opera Software has released a new version of its browser with upgraded security features to help repel hackers and con-men, Globeandmail.com reports.
The Oslo-based maker of the Web's No. 3 browser said in a news release that the latest version of its software for Windows and Linux operating systems also includes voice interaction capabilities and automatic scaling of Web pages to any sized window.
The new browser seeks to protect users from the hazards of the Internet with such features as a security information field that indicates the trustworthiness of banking and shopping websites.
The security field automatically starts when a user visits a secure website, indicating the level of security on a scale of one to three, and showing who owns the security certificate.

Nine new Mozilla vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to install malicious code or steal personal data have been discovered in the Mozilla Suite and the Firefox open-source browser, CNET reports.
Details of the nine flaws were published on Mozilla's security Web site over the weekend. Most of the vulnerabilities are based on the way the applications handle JavaScript.
On Monday, security advisory firm Secunia issued a "highly critical" rating on the flaws found in Mozilla Firefox 0.x and 1.x versions. Secunia posted its advisory on eight of the flaws.
All versions of Mozilla Suite prior to version 1.7.7 and all versions of Firefox prior to 1.0.3 are vulnerable.
