...Phil Hester knows that competition is good for AMD. With the release of Intel’s Core 2 Duo desktop processors AMD is again in the #2 spot and feeling more competition than they have in the last couple of years. But AMD isn’t sitting around twiddling their thumbs. They’ve already taped out their next-generation “Barcelona” quad-core processor design with healthy increases in IPC and parallelism inside an already established power envelope. With all of the "Empire Strikes Back" comparisons that have been made when referring to Intel's Core 2 Duo launch, I had to remember something old Obi Wan Kenobi said, "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine." Hopefully we will see the competition between Intel and AMD remain as exciting as a good saber fight and according to AMD, we will.

Tremendously powerful multicore desktop processors are moving into the market place very soon. The real question we need to ponder is what exactly will we do with all of that power? I am not clear on that right now in the desktop arena, but let's hope the software engineers and game designers are not far behind with the answers.
