Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drives failing

SEAGATE'S FLAGSHIP desktop Barracuda 7200.11 drives, in particular the 1TB (ST31000340AS) units, are failing at an alarming rate and prompting outrage from their faithful customers.

A new self-bricking feature apparently resides in faulty firmware microcode which will rear its ugly head sometime at boot detection. Essentially the drive will be working as normal for a while, then - out of the blue - it'll brick itself to death. The next time you reboot your computer the drive will simply lock itself up as a failsafe and won't be detected by the BIOS. In other words, there's power, spin-up, but no detection to enable booting.

Naturally the Seagate forums (as well as many other customer-driven forums, like etailers and hardware sites) are flooded with testimonies of customers' experiences with Seagate support. These are helpful enough to ship you a new drive, as per the warranty, but invariably the drives end up bricking as well.

RMA and Data Recovery Centres are also reporting that there's a very high rate of failure on these drives. One user in particular reports having set up a 6 TB drive array and over the course of 1 month having half the drives fail on him. No official stats are available, but at least one RMA middleman has told us there's about 30-40% failure rates.

According to data recovery experts Seagate has diagnosed the problem and issued a new firmware to address it. However, drives that have already been affected can't have the firmware applied to them due to their locked-down status.

Users are extra-peeved because beyond the usual RMA drill, if they want to recover the data on those drives they can get stuck with a hefty data recovery bill to pay.

Over a month into the problem Seagate had still not come back to customers with an official solution. Despite the company updating the firmware on newer drives, it has issued no recall on the firmware-defective drives that are still on shop shelves. They must be waiting for some grand event to come and go, say a shareholder meeting?

Drive origin and firmware seem to be Thailand and SD15, but at least one user reports having had identical problems with a unit from the Wuxi(ng) fab and the SD35 firmware.

Of course, we've mailed and called Seagate about this, but it seems their execs are too busy to pick up the phone or write back. We'll just refer them to that longstanding truth that good names are built over years and shattered in seconds.

Basicamente o problema afecta vários modelos das séries Barracuda 7200.11 e Barracuda ES.2 SATA, bem como discos da série DiomondMax 22 da Maxtor

Dentro de cada modelo apenas os que tiverem algumas versões de firmware mais recentes é que estão afectados por este problema. O problema manifesta-se no disco deixar de ser reconhecido pelo computador e obviamente perde-se o acesso aos dados. Nos casos em que o disco já apresenta a anomalia já não é possível meter um firmware para corrigir. Nos discos com firmwares afectados mas que ainda se encontram a funcionar existe a possibilidade de actualizar o firmware de modo a evitar futuros problemas.

Nota: Nalguns modelos não existe firmware disponível neste momento, devido a problemas verificados pela Seagate, que decidiu retirar os firmwares do site.

Aconselho aqueles que vão efectuar a actualização de firmware que façam backup de dados, pois existe a possibilidade do disco ficar inoperável

Tenho um desses modelos o ST3500320AS há quase 1 ano.

Curiosamente avariou passadas cerca de 2 semanas de ter comprado, fui à loja e deram-me 1 novo, mas cerca de150GB de informação foram perdidos...

Agora fiquei preocupado...

Pelo que andei a ler pela net, essa fix acaba por matar as drives que ainda funcionam lol. A seagate mandou esse fix mas o pessoal anda todo a queixar-se que não funciona e o disco deixa de ser reconhecido.

Por isso não instalem qualquer fix se o vosso disco estiver a funcionar. A seagate retirou do site o novo firmware, porque já viu que tava a dar muita m€rda. No forum oficial deles já ia com 9 paginas de pessoal que fez o update, supostamente pra curar o disco e este deixou de ser reconhecido como bootable disk, embora a bios o detecte.

Esperem até tar disponivel novo update.

também tenho um ST3500320AS (500GB) já há meio-ano e ainda não tive nenhum problema com ele.

Realmente o melhor é esperar eté ter a certeza que o fix é 100% seguro, não vá ficar sem o disco...

Pelo forum acho que já começaram a testar e tá a dar.
Nao se perde os dados a actualizar o firmware pois não? isto se correr bem claro lol.

Acabei de fazer a actualização no meu, um ST3500320AS. Nem fiz backup de nada... à confiança
Foi sem probs, estava com revision SD15, ficou com SD1A.

300GB de informação não é brincadeira...

Digam-me, que eu ainda não pesquisei isso: existe a possibilidade de a drive "morrer" ao colocar este firmware? É que não tenho o como fazer backup de todo o conteúdo...

como já foi dito, a Seagate colocou online um fix que 'queimou' bastantes discos. Depois de o substituir por este mais recente, ainda não ouvi queixas do mesmo, assim como já há bastante pessoal que o usou e diz que correu bem (eu incluído).
