Pentium 3: de 1GHz para 1,4 GHz

Caros amigos,

surgiu-me a hipótese de fazer um upgrade ao meu processador e trocar o meu actual coppermine a 1 GHz (133 mhz FSB) por um tualatin a 1,4 GHz.

A board é uma Epox 3-VSA socket 370.

Eu penso que dá, mas... o que dizem? Vai funcionar?

Do que estive a ler não vi nada em contrário, é o mesmo socket 370 e usam o mesmo bus de 133Mhz.

o Tualatin é a versao Hardcore, com 512KB cache L2 Vs os 256KB. Para alem de ser em 130nm vs os 180nm.

em relaçao a compatibilidades le isto:

The AGTL+ signaling voltage of the Tualatin is 1.25v verses 1.5v for the Coppermine. Also, core voltage is different with the Tualatin utilizing 1.475v verses 1.75v for the Coppermine P3. A new VRM specification is utilized, which obviates the use of 2 additional pins (VID25mv, and VTT_PWRGD), and allows for core voltage adjustments in 0.025v increments, instead of the 0.05v increments available to Coppermines. The long and the short of this comes down to the fact that new mainboards/chipsets with VRM 8.5 support are required to run the Tualatin cores.

Quer dizer que a minha board não suporta este processador?

Ou apenas não consegue aproveitar as vantagens de overclock?

Mesmo que funcione, os ganhos não me parecem ser significativos, pois certamente, não vais correr nada no PIII 1.4GHz que não corras no PIII 1.0GHz.

Pois... só que mais lento um pouco!

Eu sei que os ganhos não são significativos, mas entendo que é o máximo que posso retirar desta configuração sem grandes investimentos. O processador não está caro e sempre retirava mais qualquer coisa. O objectivo não é jogar, nem nada que se pareça; antes leitura de avi's. As memórias (SDRAM, claro) também estão pensadas...

Para serem compativeis basta terem o mesmo socket e suportarem as mesmas velocidades? Ou há mais qualquer coisa?

Além disso há o que o ghost_matrix te indicou, ou seja, tens de verificar se a tua motherboard tem a suporta VRM 8.5, que permite a utilização dos Tualatin. Penso que deverás ter essa informação no manual da motherboard.
