With the launch of their joint venture 7th-generation LCD panel maker S-LCD, collaboration areas between Korea's Samsung Electronics and Sony of Japan are seen to expand from LCD panels for TVs to almost all LCD application segments.
"With the collaboration, Sony is regarded as our large 'captive market'. And in this period of oversupply, the captive market is increasingly important to ensure stable sales," said a manager at Samsung Electronics.
Until the middle of last year, LG Philips LCD had been the largest supplier of LCD panels to Sony. But after the publicity of partnership between Samsung Electronics and Sony, LG Philips LCD began reducing the supply of LCD panels to Sony, making Sony to turn to Samsung Electronics to fill up the shortage in supply.
Since then, Sony is receiving 32 and 42-inch LCD panels from Samsung Electronics for most of its demand, and it is almost entirely relying on Samsung Electronics for LCD panels for TVs since early this year. For PC monitors, Samsung Electronics recently began supplying 15 and 17-inch panels to the Japanese partner.
